FAQ
How does acupuncture work?
There are many theories about how acupuncture works, but the most accepted is that acupuncture helps the body to release endorphins. Endorphins are chemicals produced by the brain to relieve pain and achieve an overall sense of calm and well-being. Needles are inserted into specific points along a meridian or channels of energy that run like rivers throughout the body. If the flow is obstructed the energy can back up like a dam in the river and pain can result. Acupuncture stimulates the body’s own healing process to promote physical and emotional well being. When the needles are inserted at these specific points, the energy becomes unblocked and a healthy flow is reestablished.
Does it hurt?
Everyone has a different tolerance for pain and will experience the sensation of acupuncture differently. Acupuncture needles are solid, rather than hollow like a hypodermic needle and they are about the thickness of a human hair. Some people may feel a mild, pricking sensation, pressure or nothing at all as the needle is inserted. Guide tubes are used to make the initial insertion less painful. Some people feel a heaviness, dull ache, warmth, tingling at the site of the needle – which is referred to as the feeling of Qi. Many people feel relaxed and fall asleep during treatments.
Is acupuncture safe?
When practiced by a licensed, trained, competent acupuncturist it is extremely safe. The needles are made of solid, stainless steel and are designed for single-use. They are purchased in sterile packages and are disposed of into a bio-hazard container after each use. Needles are never re-used.
How do the herbs work?
Herbs are combined in formulas based on ancient recipes that are designed to treat the root of the illness. They work more slowly than western pharmaceuticals, but have few to no side effects. The synergy of the herb combination is important in achieving the desired results.
How many treatments will I need?
This depends on the nature of your condition and the individual constitution of the patient. Typically more treatments will be required at the beginning and may be up to 3 times a week initially. As the condition improves the number of treatments will be cut back to once a week or once every 2 weeks. A general rule of thumb is that acute or short-term conditions should require fewer treatments than a chronic or long-term condition. Some people see immediate results, while others see more cumulative results over time. I can usually give you a good idea of how many treatments I would like to see you for to give acupuncture a good, honest try for your specific condition and constitution. It is often recommended to get a treatment regularly for maintenance or prevention, whether it be monthly or seasonally.
How long is each visit?
The first visit is an hour and a half. Follow up visits are about an hour.
How long do the needles stay in for?
This depends on the individual, but needles will generally be retained for 20 to 40 minutes.
Will my insurance cover this?
Many insurance companies cover acupuncture. They may or may not have a limit on the number of treatments they cover per year. I would be happy to check with your insurance company to see if they cover acupuncture. I am set up to bill your insurance company directly for your convenience.
Do I need a referral?
In most cases you will not need a referral, however some insurance companies do require a referral from your primary care doctor. I will be able to tell you if you require a referral when I check on your insurance coverage.
